Shemin pathway
Webbutions of the C5 pathway and the Shemin pathway, based on feeding experiments with sodium[1-14C]- and[5-14C] a-ketoglutarate [20]. We were interested in investigating the existence of the Shemin pathway for ALA and the ratio of ALA biosyn-thesis from the Shemin pathway to that from the C5 pathway in E. gracilis. Shemin and others reported that Webhave been known to possess alternative pathways (Dailey et al. 2024). Since the C 5 pathway is widely distrib-uted in prokaryotes, it is considered a primitive pathway for ALA synthesis, whereas the Shemin pathway is modern. However, it is still unknown how and why the Shemin pathway developed and replaced the established C 5 path-
